Competitive advantages
YugabyteDB is a distributed ACID-compliant database that brings together four must-have needs of cloud-native microservices, namely SQL as a flexible query language, continuous availability under failures, low-latency read performance, and globally-distributed write scalability.

Other databases do not serve all of these needs simultaneously.

- Monolithic SQL databases offer SQL with ACID transactions and low-latency reads but neither have ability to tolerate failures not can scale writes across multiple nodes, zones, regions and clouds.

- Distributed NoSQL databases offer high availability, read performance and write scalability but give up on SQL features such as multi-key/relational data modeling, ACID transactions and strong consistency.

Typical application scenarios
YugabyteDB is a good fit for fast-growing, cloud native applications that need to serve business-critical data reliably, with zero data loss, high availability and low latency. Common use cases include:

- Distributed Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) applications needing multi-region scalability without compromising strong consistency and low latency. E.g. User identity, Retail product catalog, Financial data service.

- Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP), also known as Translytical, applications needing real-time analytics on transactional data. E.g User personalization, fraud detection, machine learning.

- Streaming applications needing to efficiently ingest, analyze and store ever-growing data. E.g. IoT sensor analytics, time series metrics, real-time monitoring.
Licensing and pricing models

YugabyteDB is a 100% open source project licensed under the permissive Apache 2.0 license. There is no "Enterprise Edition" of the database that commercializes "open core" database features such as backups and security. These features are included in the core open source project itself.

Yugabyte, the company behind YugabyteDB, has two commercial offerings focused on the management aspect of the database.

1. Yugabyte Platform - a self-managed database management platform that allows users to build their own YugabyteDB-as-a-Service on any cloud or Kubernetes infrastructure. Pricing is based on the number of CPU cores (physical or virtual) in your environment.

2. Yugabyte Cloud - a fully-managed YugabyteDB-as-a-Service running on major public clouds. Offering is currently in Beta with expected GA in Summer 2020. Pay-as-you-go pricing will be announced at GA.
