TiDB is an open-source NewSQL database built by PingCAP. TiDB supports Hybrid Transactional and Analytical Processing (HTAP) workloads and is suitable for various use cases that require high availability and strong consistency with large-scale data.

Competitive advantages

In the current database landscape, infrastructure engineers often have to use one database for online transactional processing (OLTP) and another for online analytical processing (OLAP). Seeing no good solution that can do both in real-time, PingCAP cofounders decided to build a globally scalable Hybrid Transactional/Analytical Processing (HTAP) database the open-source way.

Now, a new storage component that’s columnar-based, called TiFlash (currently in beta) is being introduced, that sits alongside TiKV.

TiDB aims to break down this separation by building an HTAP database that enables real-time business analysis based on live transactional data. With TiDB, engineers can now spend less time managing multiple database solutions, and more time delivering business value for their companies and customers.

Typical application scenarios

TiDB is designed to support both OLTP and OLAP scenarios. You can use TiDB, the stateless SQL layer compatible with MySQL, for OLTP and ad-hoc OLAP workload, and TiSpark, the TiDB connector for Spark, to process complex OLAP queries.

Use Case Scenarios:

  1. Amount of data is too large for a standalone database
  2. Don't want to use manual sharding solutions
  3. Access mode has no obvious hotspot
  4. Must have transactions, strong consistency, and disaster recovery
