MarkLogic
Specific characteristics

The MarkLogic Multi-Model Database provides the simplest way to integrate data from silos. It has two decades of development behind it, and has proven success in thousands of mission-critical environments around the world.

MarkLogic is a modern database with all the features that have made NoSQL databases popular, and a few more features that make it particularly excellent for data integration:

  • Multi-Model Database – MarkLogic stores and queries data in documents, graph data, or relational data, providing incredible flexibility.
  • Built-in Search – Unlike every other database, MarkLogic has a search engine built-in to its core. This results in less time and effort to build and configure indexes for standard queries, and does not require a bolted-on search engine for full-text search like other databases.
  • Elastic Scalability – MarkLogic is a massively scalable database that scales horizontally in clusters on commodity hardware to hundreds of nodes, petabytes of data, and billions of documents—and still processes tens of thousands of transactions per second.

MarkLogic is a trusted database, having all the enterprise features required to handle sensitive enterprise data:

  • Advanced Security – MarkLogic is way ahead of every competitor in the area of security. MarkLogic has granular security controls at the document and even element/property level, redaction and anonymization for safe sharing, as well as advanced encryption. MarkLogic is also the only modern database with a common criteria security certification.
  • ACID Transactions – MarkLogic has multi-document ACID transactions that provide data consistency even with large-scale transactional applications.
  • Cloud Neutral – MarkLogic has been successful running in the cloud for over a decade and you can run it anywhere—this means any public cloud provider, a hybrid environment, or on-premises. If you want to make changes later on, that is okay. You do not need a new license.

MarkLogic’s main use case is the MarkLogic Operational Data Hub. The fastest way to deploy the entire architecture is with the MarkLogic Data Hub Service, a fully automated cloud service for no-friction data integration. It makes it simple to deploy a MarkLogic Data Hub in minutes, enabling agile teams to immediately start integrating and curating data for both operational and analytical use. Delivered as a cloud service, it provides on-demand capacity, auto-scaling, automated database operations, and proven enterprise data security. But, unlike many cloud services, it is cost-effective and predictable even as enterprise workloads fluctuate.

Competitive advantages

The main benefit of MarkLogic is simplicity. By making things simpler, MarkLogic makes data integration more agile, less expensive, and more secure. Our advantage is demonstrated in the proof of our customers’ results, but here are some of the key differentiating capabilities:

  • Load data as is – Instead of waiting on complex ETL, data ingestion is immediate. There is no need to define a schema in advance.
  • Unified platform – Instead of stitching together a bunch of separate products, everything is already unified in a single platform that provides a consistent, real-time view.
  • Smart curation – Instead of worrying about mapping schemas together, integrating an MDM tool, writing custom algorithms, and doing other low-value tasks, you can leverage built-in, intelligent capabilities to enrich, harmonize, and master data easier and faster.
  • Advanced security – Instead of disjointed data lineage, the database tracks metadata right alongside the data itself. Instead of handing over security to app developers to worry about, the database manages the roles, permissions, privileges, etc. And, most important, instead of worrying whether to lock data up or risk sharing it, administrators have extremely granular, tight control over exactly what data gets shared with whom.
  • Simple development – Instead of waiting for ETL to complete or having to learn some proprietary language, developers start building data services APIs as soon as the initial data is loaded. Rather than learn a proprietary language, developers can rely on industry standard languages to build apps.

In Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for ODBMS (Operational Database Management Systems), MarkLogic is positioned in the Challengers quadrant for the past three years.

In Gartner’s 2018 Magic Quadrant for DMSA (Database Management Systems for Analytics), MarkLogic is positioned in the Visionary quadrant for the second year in a row.

Typical application scenarios

MarkLogic’s main use case is the Operational Data Hub. A Data Hub is useful for managing just about any type of data in any industry. But, there are some use cases that are often repeated among our customers:

  • Smart metadata management
  • Curating data for advanced analytics
  • Advanced search and discovery
