Increased popularity for consuming DBMS services out of the cloud

According to the recent DB-Engines ranking, the popularity of Database as a Service offerings almost doubled in the last 12 months.

It is a year ago since we blogged about the popularity of Database as a Service (DBaaS) offerings and we described a strong momentum for DBaaS. We think that it is time to see if that trend has continued.

First let us look at the popularity score of DBaaS expressed as the percentage of that category relative to all systems on DB-Engines.com:

There is no doubt that the trend is ongoing. DBaaS systems almost doubled their popularity from 0.66% in October 2014 to 1.11% today.

The top 5 DBaaS systems in the DB-Engines ranking are:

  Overall Rank Popularity Score
Amazon DynamoDB 27 21.33
Microsoft Azure SQL Database 30 18.85
Amazon Redshift 39 8.05
Google BigQuery 46 5.55
Cloudant 49 5.19

It should be mentioned that we are distinguishing between

- pure DBaas offerings, in which you directly work with the (web-) service, using built-in features and functionality with basically no database administration needs.

- installing a DBMS on a virtual infrastructure (e.g. Amazon EC2). In that case you are using the infrastructure as a service (aka 'IaaS'), not the DBMS itself.

Only the first type is listed as a separate DBMS in DB-Engines and accounts for the DBaaS popularity. For example, the Microsoft Azure SQL Database does appear on DB-Engines but the Microsoft SQL Server running in a Microsoft Azure Virtual Machine does not. In fact, the popularity of the latter contributes to the score of Microsoft SQL Server.
